Emilia Romagna is a perfect choice for a low key summer Italian vacation with amazing food. The cities Parma, Modena, and Bologna all sit within it’s borders and are the birthplaces of some of Italy’s most famous foods.
Emilia Romagna sits right in the middle of Italy, surrounded by the ever popular regions Tuscany, Lombardy, Piedmont, and Veneto. It’s a relatively quiet region of Italy, even in the depths of the European summer. If I were planning a summer trip to Italy, I would include Emilia Romagna simply due to the volume of amazing food that comes from this region. Tortellini, Ravioli, Parmesan cheese, balsamic vinegar…. Do I need to continue?
I took the above photos on one week roadtrip through Parma, Modena, the village of Fontanellato and its castle and bright green moat, and the street art mecca of Dozza. It was incredibly hot, as there is no natural body of water nearby, so hopefully you can find a hotel with A/C! We stayed in Parma, which felt like a ghost town in comparison to even Modena.
Some favorite places:
Dozza – A mountain village known for colorful street art all over the village buildings.
Fontanellato – a small town west of Parma. Known for its famous castle, which is surrounded by a bright green moat. Check out Cibarium Salsamenteria for a great selection of cured meats and Prosciutto de Parma.
Trattoria Berti – A small restaurant in the middle of the countryside. It’s a perfect spot for lunch, complete with red and white check tablecloths, and cool melon and burrata on a hot day.
River Disco and Pool – If you need to cool off, this place is a perfect spot to swim, drink, and listen to music.
