Snapshots of Penang

I have always wanted to visit Penang. I think I first felt the wanderlust for this city about 20 years ago when my grandmother held one of her birthday parties at a restaurant in New York City called Penang (which unfortunately has since closed). At the time, I had no idea that Penang was in Malaysia let alone being able to grasp the idea of Malaysian culture. What I did know, however, was that the food at this restaurant was unbelievably delicious and extremely memorable. I *still* try to reconstruct one of the dishes I had at the restaurant in my own kitchen. To no avail. (For the record, it was a chicken and pineapple dish that most likely contained fish and nut ingredients I cannot use in my house for allergy reasons.)

I NEED to go there – not only to possibly find that dish, but also to quench a curiosity 20 years in the making. Perhaps this problem can be solved very soon…

In the meantime, one of my close friends (who also happens to be an extremely talented writer, blogger, and photographer) Jenny Adams has just visited and came back with some amazing stories. Some are enticing, some are a little off-putting. But overall, she has fueled an even more intense fire under my belly to get myself over to Malaysia. She sent me these photos to show me what I’ve been missing. Because let’s face it – I am a total sucker for cool tiles and photogenic doorways…

Have you been to Malaysia or Penang? Tell me why I need to go!
